It is easy to assume that higher is always better, but the right t-shirt weight depends on what you are making and who is wearing it. This guide compares 160 GSM vs 180 GSM t-shirts so you can choose the right blank for your print shop, brand or event order.
What does GSM mean on a t-shirt?
GSM stands for grams per square meter. It measures how much a square meter of the fabric weighs, so a higher GSM means a heavier, denser fabric. In US listings you will also see fabric weight in ounces per square yard: 160 GSM is about 4.7 oz and 180 GSM is about 5.3 oz. As a rough guide, tees under 150 GSM are considered lightweight, 150 to 180 GSM is the mid-range, and above that you are into heavyweight territory.
GSM is only part of the picture. The fiber blend, the yarn and the knit also decide how a t-shirt feels, so use GSM to compare similar shirts, not to judge quality on its own.

Which t-shirt weight is better for screen printing?
Both weights print well when the fabric is smooth and consistent. The differences show up in the finished product:
- Opacity: a 160 GSM white or light-colored tee is thinner, so a dark design or a hanger shadow can show through. If you print large, dark artwork on light colors, check this on a sample.
- Hand feel: a big, thick print sits on the fabric. On a lighter tee it can feel more noticeable, so many printers use thinner ink layers or water-based inks for big designs on lightweight blanks.
- Stability: heavier fabric tends to stay flatter through pressing and curing, while lighter fabric needs a little more care with tension and platen adhesive.
None of these are reasons to avoid 160 GSM. They are reasons to test your artwork on the exact shirt before a full run.
Our 160 GSM cotton-blend tee

Our unisex cotton-blend t-shirts are made from a 55% cotton / 45% polyester blend, with a 1x1 rib crew neck, solid-dyed color and a regular unisex fit, in sizes S to 3XL. How to choose the right t-shirt weight
Ask three questions before you order:
- What is the shirt for? Event giveaways, team shirts, staff uniforms and everyday merch are well served by 160 GSM. A premium retail drop with a boxy, heavier feel may call for 180 GSM or more.
- What color and design? Dark colors hide show-through, so weight matters less. Large dark prints on white or pale colors are where a heavier tee earns its price.
- What is your budget per piece? Heavier fabric costs more, and in a bulk order the difference adds up. Choose the lightest weight that still meets your quality bar.
